TEHRAN.(Iranart) –Three photographs, captured by Iranian artist Soheila Esmaeili, have been nominated for recognition at the Vantage Point Sharjah 9 (VPS9).

The photos belong to Esmaeili’s ‘Immortality’ collection and will be on display at the exhibition – along with 38 photos from 20 countries – from September 18 to December 18, in Al Hamriyah Studios in the UAE.

For the ninth edition of the event, the Sharjah Art Foundation invited local and international photographers to submit their works under the categories of conceptual; photojournalism and documentary; as well as experimental and staged photography.

‘Immortality’ comprises staged portraits, reminiscent of famous paintings in the history of art, criticizing the environmental crisis modern societies are facing, as all costumes and accessories in the photos are made of plastic waste.

“Immortality has been an ancient dream for humankind, who has been trying to fulfill that dream by creating pieces of artwork. But it is paradoxical that people have materialized that dream by making waste rather than being an artist,” read the introductory note for the exhibition.

“The durability of some wastes, the plastic ones significantly, is estimated to be more than a thousand years, with no end to this huge volume of waste in sight. This collection seeks to depict this simultaneous dream and nightmare through visual form.”
